Thanks for the post on J. Cole!!! I'm still digesting [The Warm-Up], not to mention the brotha's plethora of delightful daggers floating about on line. It was truly a pleasure to host he and the crew last year for the free Duke show. Cole's an intellect--a thinker...and down-to-earth, too. He reminds me of the Hip Hop that reared me--how Hip Hop USED to be!! Fresh, Free, and Motivational!!
Regarding the state of Hip Hop and its current vacuum of creative indolence, Hip Hop, and really, "Black Arts" as a whole, desperately needs to fill its current void of lackluster intellectual innovation. Drake's fine...for the pop-crowd, that is, (you know, the suburban white kids who buy the albums for their sambo highs & nigger fixes). That kind of material makes for..."good business," not "good LifE." Cole's [Dollar and a Dream] has gotten me through a many hungry days and growling nights. Or maybe I'm just the only nigga who's had to eat Ramen noodles for a week, and ride around on E for damn near a month, simply tryin' to make it. As a poor writer, grad student, & young entrepreneur, it's the "Dream" that wakes me up everyday. TRUE Hip Hop feeds the soul...it's LiFe, LoVe, and EnerGy. It's POWER!! It is struggle and perserverance!! It's "The People"...and our expressions, ignored. That's exactly why the industry hides MCs like Nas, Talib, Immortal Technique, and Mos Def. As brotha Lupe articulated, "Dumb 'em Down." Oh, and MY GOD--MY GOD...Lawd have mercy...I won't even speak on the Wocka Flocka dude (who rightly asserts, he doesn't even need lyrics to infiltrate our children's minds). Method Man was right about that dude. I understand he's only tryin' to feed himself, but as black folk, we should HANG his damn record label upside down, allow their change to fall out, and sponsor some scholarships with that blood money!! In the 80's, it was Ronald Reagan who brought the hood crack--now rap's flippin' smack. As Esther Rolle would say from [Good Times], "DAMN-DAMN-DAMN!!!" Where's Huey, John Brown & Bro. Malcolm!!??
But anyway, bring on the album, Roc Nation! Come on, we need brotha Cole....And so do you!! Wale's kool--damn kool! Honestly speaking, his sold-out show at Cat's Cradle last year was one of the most bone-rattling electrifying live shows I've EVER seen, (and that's saying a lot). But he's no J.Cole lyricist; we all know that. We need lines for the mind--the kind that make you think and better yourself. That's like comparing Jay Z to Nas...one makes money--the other makes MOVEMENTS. Don't be like the Jews...who'd rather sell "coon dancin'" than creative art!!! *All Praise to HIP HOP*
LifE KiThas dedicated itself to building a foundation that prompts a life style of self-actualization and collective individuality through innovative apparel and accessories.
Love.Energy.Knowledge.Time
The LifE KiT Birth
The idea for LifE KiT hit us in 2008 during a less than eventful spring break in Durham, North Carolina; with slim pockets and idol hands, LifE KiT was conceived. We started to design neckwear for ourselves and close friends, but our demand soon grew. As our demand seemed to grow over night it only made sense for us to organize our efforts. We knew we wanted to do something that was honest and of substance, something that we felt was definitely lacking in the accessory industry. We brainstormed and sought guidance from wise advisers and with that, LifE KiT was born.
Our hand made products are developed and manufactured in the humble dwellings of our lab located in Durham, NC. Made from natural elements, our handmade neckwear line laid the groundwork and has inspired us to develop similar products. All of our products are inspired by our core values Love, Energy, Knowledge and Time, which we believe are the keys to individual and collective success. Through our products we aim to inspire creativity, ignite passion, and speak to the universal truths of life.
I heard this song at his concert and loved it and then forgot what is was....now I can remember. =)
